Subfloor Preparation Guide
SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
Ensuring a long lasting, visually attractive flooring finish
involves following best practice in subfloor preparation
prior to the installation of new floorcoverings, including
making sure the subfloor is in a suitable condition,
applying a smoothing compound to ensure a perfectly
smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings and
remembering to prime beforehand.
Before a smoothing compound is applied, the subfloor
must be checked to ensure that it is suitably sound,
smooth and dry enough for the receipt of subfloor
preparation products and floorcoverings. This should
include the removal of any surface contaminants and
old adhesive residues (when not using a smoothing
compound designed to be applied directly over these
residues).
It is also recommended that flooring contractors
check for excess subfloor moisture levels and deploy
a moisture management solution where necessary.
Unchecked excess subfloor moisture, whether residual
construction moisture or rising damp, continues to
be the leading cause of floor failure, resulting in major
inconvenience and remedial work.

including measuring subfloor moisture levels, visit the

Preparation Guide.
